Success

I think the show was a success. There were at least 80 people over the course of the evening and the band was GREAT. Congrats on all of the hard work, organizing, bringing food and showing up. All of the Sertoma folks couldn't say enough good stuff about the class and the art.
Remember to bring a 2x4(1.5 x 3.5 inches) to class on Monday for our project for this week.

  1. so i just went to simple gestures for the first time and it was sooo cool.. if you haven't been you definitely should go asap... i think it would be really cool to do a show there at the end of the semester like last semester's class did .. meredith's piece from last semester really fits well in the store! -Rebecca

  2. Adam- I love the natural texture of the board you chose and the slight variety of the pieces is really great.

Sarah- The pieces in the middle create really interesting shapes and spaces.

Maggie- Can't wait to see where your theme goes next.

Madeline- Can't wait to see it assembled. Do bring pics!

and Mike- I am very very disappointed. Allow me to go cry in my corner now.

  5. I DID IT I DID IT! Okay, soooo...

Jim White collaborated with British electronica trio Morcheeba on the album No Such Place 2001

Morcheeba also collaborated with singer Skye Edwards.

Skye Edwards covered the song "Perfect Day" that was written by songwritter Lou Reed in 1972

Lou Reed was first in the band The Velvet Underground with John Cale

John Cale attended the University of London in... London, where actor Sir Derek Jacobi was born

Sir Derek Jacobi portrayed Francis Bacon in the movie Love Is the Devil: Study for a portrait of Francis Bacon.

    BAM! 6! DONE!

Now as far as the works go to note..

Maggie - I'm really intrigued and excited about where you'll go for this semester, and I hope to notice that theme more with the next projects.

Tommy - really liked the wood smoothing and sanding you did to those blocks. They kinda looked like little wooden pillows to me.

Madeline - you could also make the most insane croquet course with how you cut the 2X4... Well, I'd thought i'd be a cool idea but I'd really like to see how you had it assembled as well.

Katie- I said it to you as you came in with it, that project turned out really well with how you stacked and glued the pieces as a tower. It looks great.

Lauren- I'm pretty sure I said this to you but I really liked how you scrapped the paint off of the wood to give it that rugged look. It definitely felt like it went with that rope-ish stuff you put on it.

And Mike...I dunno what you did to Caroline, but I'm sure it was in just. You are the Art Teacher, and as my mom said, "I am the Art Teacher, thus I am always right." ...I think it went something like that.

REMEMBER THE PUMPKINS FOR MONDAY EVERYONE!!!

  6. I'm going to try this 6 degrees thing...

(1)Francis Bacon met art critic (2)David Sylvestor in 1950 who admired Bacon's work. (2) Sylvestor coined the term "kitchen sink realism" (a cultural movement depicting domestic struggles of the working class). Singer (3)Steven Patrick Morrissey was influenced by kitchen sink realism which influenced his music (he references some working class issues in some of his music). (3)Morrissey criticized musicians like (4)Elton John for pointless lyrics and being more interested in celebrity than music. (4) Elton John and (5)Jim Creeggan (as well as the rest of his band the Barenaked Ladies) were in a documentary on farm aid which was aired on country music television. (5) Jim Creeggan and the rest of the Barenaked Ladies were on a (6) Jim White album titled "Drill a hole in that substrate and tell me what you see".

All the wood pieces looked great! I think it was interesting seeing them presented on the wood tables. It would be cool to see them in different enviornments. I like how some are ever changing like Adam's and Tommy's and others are glued together in diverse ways.

p.s. I forgot if we need to bring in tools to carve the pumpkins or not. Do we?

  7. Ok, I made it ONE! However, this is my fist time playing 6 degrees so I’m not sure if it’s good or bad to make the connection in one person. Since there is no one here but me and my laptop, I’m writing my own rules. I just won the game and I’m awesome… ☺

Neal Brown - wrote critical reviews for Frieze Magazine on both the art of Francis Bacon (Issue 40, May 1998 titled “Francis Bacon”) and Jim Shaw (Issue 57, March 2001 titled “ A Noble Art/ Jim Shaw”)

    YEYEAH!!!

As for the 2x4 project, I really loved seeing everyone's different ideas and how diverse all of the pieces are. I liked how Tommy, Adam, and Madeline had several small pieces that stood alone, watching the interaction of those pieces, and the movement they created was really interesting.

  8. Hello! so i found the correct page to leave comments :-)
Nick-thanks for the feed back on my 2x4 project!
I made a comment about Tommy's on the other page but I will say that overall i thought the whole class did an awesome job with the project!
I'm going to try for the 6 steps..this may be a stretch but here it is...
    1) Jim White plays in a band called "Dirty Three" with Warren Ellis who plays the Violin 2) which is considered in the same family as the Cello. 3) Tina Guo played the song "Pretender" by the Foo Fighters on a cello. 4) The Foo FIghters sent out a missive telling the Republican presidential candidate, John McCain to stop using their song, "my hero" to promote his campaign. 5) There is a blog online discussing McCain titled the "new Atlantis" 6) Which you might like to know...is a book written by the one and only...that's right...Francis Bacon! ;) thanka sir

Hope everyone had a great weekend! See you all monday with pumpkins..yay

  9. Everyone knows that Jim white is a musician. What everyone does not know about White is his passion for underwater basket weaving. While at New York University, White was apart of the Underwater Basket Weaving Society. He won regional events and became the face of the UBWS.

Although he could not partake in the UBWS due to other obligations, Reggie Jackson was a faithful follower of the Society, and went to numerous events. Jackson is believed to have attributed his success in the 1977 World Series to the UBWS. After winning the series, Reggie Jackson vacationed around the Mediterranean, which he claims as one of his favorite beaches.

Among the other hot vacation spots Jackson visited, there is an island named Crete. This island is considered home to many world famous Cretans. Nikos Kazantzakis, obviously being the most famous of all, studied philosophy in Paris. He returned to Greece right after, and quickly became a communist because he believed communism would give him the ability to grow amazing facial hair. He was proved correct.

Vladimir Lenin, complete with his facial hair, was a principal figure in the October Revolution, among other things. What truly started this revolution, though, no one really knows. One theory, that definitely has the most substantial evidence, is the Oktoberfest Theory. Summed up, it claims that Lenin was inspired, or possibly influenced, by the beer in Germany. There is evidence showing his visit to Germany in the first week of October 1917, and legends of his parties. And, yes, he did this undercover during the First World War.

While Lenin was getting his drink on in Germany, the Germans were preparing to attack London. They first had to go through Paris, even though they did not really care about having it or not. London was the objective. Everyone knows why Hitler wanted to attack London. The reason is simple: Adolf Hitler wanted to find Atlantis. With the Ark of the Covenant and power of Atlantis, Germany would prevail.

Although Atlantis was not in London, Hitler believed there was a map on the inside of Francis Bacon’s novel, The New Atlantis. Now, we can look back and see that Hitler was an idiot. The map would not be kept with the book, but rather it was kept inside The Turn of the Screw. At the time, I bet Francis Bacon’s book seemed like a good lead though.

  10. Allrighty you guys, I've never done the whole six degrees thing before so here it goes...

Jim White uses Jesus in the title of his album.

His music is considered alt country.

Country music reminds me of a farmer.

    Farmers raise pigs

Pigs get turned into Bacon. I LOVE BACON!

Which brings me to Francis Bacon, a painter who was also inspired by Jesus.

    YAYS'S

As for the 2x4 project, I'm really blown away by everybody's pieces. To think, we were all given the exact same thing to start with, and to see the way each of us interpreted how to transform this 8 ft long piece of wood was amazing...Great job to everyone.
