Once Upon A Sculpture at SERTOMA's Book Store!!!

Big thanks to SERTOMA Club of St. Augustine and their support of the Sculpture One Coffee Club over the last three semesters(yup we've had 3 shows already). Thanks as always to Doc and Les for their extra hard work to make this happen and to Christina for staying late during install. Thanks to Asilyn and The Naysayers for climbing a ladder to play the opening. Ya'll are the best! Thanks to all of the artist for working really hard and throwing yourselves into your projects. It's the only way! Congrats!!!
p.s. My battery died during Kayleigh's performance so this is only a 5 second clip. Sorry Kayleigh!

Once Upon A Sculpture

Once Upon A Sculpture exhibit at SERTOMA Book Store

The work looked great at the show on Wednesday, November the 18th at Sertoma's Book Store and as many of you pointed out we brought them lots of new customers that bought books during the exhibit.

Anthropologie!!!!!

Thanks to Anthropologie at the Town Center and to Katie(visual coordinator) for the informative hands on tour including back stage access where we made stuff that is now on display. Please take her up on internship opportunities at her store.

ANYONE READ THE BOOK LATELY

WOW!,
I can't believe ya'll are gonna hold out on not discussing the book at all or really adding anything else to the discussion. We only have 5 class periods left. The way I had it set up was there were 10 opportunities for class discussion on the blog. I know that everyone thinks the blog is hard and that facebook would be easier but it's IDENTICAL. . You have to put your email and password into both. Why not make the blog your homepage until the end of the semester? If you don't have 10 comments on the blog about the book, art or culture you will not get full credit for the class discussion portion of the class and may comprimise you're grade.
Recap: Your first two shows have been AWESOME (great job). Sketchbook show install is next Monday from 5-6pm at Simple G's. You should have your sketchbooks and your 10 Artist trading cards ready to hang for the show on Weds. December 2nd. Start the FACEBOOK and MYSPACE events now to have a HUGE SHOW AT THE END. WORK WORK WORK on your sketchbooks and art cards. Let me know if I can help in anyway. Ya'll are doing great. Now is the time to push. You can relax over Christmas.

This Monday and Wednesday at SERTOMA BOOKSTORE

Hey all,
We will install on Monday from 5-6pm and the Exhibit is Wednesday(the 18th) from 6-8pm.
Asilyn and the Naysayers are the band for the exhibit. FOOD and DRINKS ned to be discussed still. Keep the Facebook/Myspace campaigns going. This weekend is the time to push and let people know. Fliers anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!! It'd be great to have one at the SERTOMA second time around store so all of their regulars will know. I heard Doc telling someone about it today. She's doing her part. Are ya'll doing yours?
Thanks to all for coming to Anthropologie on Wednesday. It was really cool to get to see the store and assist on a window. I'll post the pics next week.

Sketchbooks and Once Upon a Sculpture Projects are looking good. It's downhill from here and Rosalie(88.5fm) pointed out on my drive home there are only 38 days before December 12th is here.

GREAT SHOW!!!!

WOW!
What a cool show. I can't believe how well everything went. Way to go everyone. Kudos to Carly for finding entertainment at the last minute. What a great connection to make. I think we should send a thank you. Carly got all of her info. The work looked great and the room looked great. Patrcik( Art dept. Chair) couldn't believe it was the same roo. Thank you everyone for working so hard. You really represented yourselves, me and Flagler Art/Sculpture very well. I'm proud to know you.
Monday is Pumpkin Carvin'. Yee Haw and them the Film is Wednesday at 7:00pm in Gomache theatre. Jim White is a really good example of how a creative individual lets the South influence their work. Please check him out before the film.
Also let's learn from the 11(2x4)'s successes and shortcomings to make the next show even better. Let's get info out sooner and flyers and posters to Simple Gestures and evrywhere we can think. We had 100+ at the show last week. I think we can push 300 if EVERYONE pulls their weight and gets it together.
Don't forget to be reading that book and commenting. Chapter 3 has begun. Where are you on your trading cards and sketchbook?Have you shopped at the thrift store yet? Don't lose the momentum of having an awesome show right out of the gates and run out of breath.
See ya tomorrow,

Official Check Up

Hey all,
Here's where you should be in the class. 1.Reading the book and commenting AT LEAST once per week. THIS IS YOUR CLASS PARTICIPATION GRADE AS I HAVE MENTIONED SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS(you can also comment about the class and what goes on or conversations you have during class with me or other sculptors in class). 2. Your Sketchbook should really(like really, really) be underway and you should start having ideas about displaying it for the December 2nd Show at Simple G's(If your sketchbook is weak, you will not do well on your final grade as this is a really MAJOR part of your grade). You should all take me up on talking these over with me and you should be checking each others sketch books out to start conceptualizing the show. 3. You should have some of your 10(Ten) living Sculptors picked out to do artist trading cards on and should be actively working on them. Remember we'll be showing these on December 2nd as well. 4. You should go shopping at Sertoma Second Time Around Store and get stuff for the show(Also should be thinking of names for the exhibit and begin the Press Release Process). This is all on each of you to get all of this done. PLEASE use your class periods wisely and use your Friday studio day. There is no way that you can get what you need to get done for this class from 5-7pm, 2 days a week.

My favorite queston MC asks in chapter 2 is "Was it aesthetic for the dismemberers?"

See you tomorrow,

Also, start working on your artist cards(they can be 3-d BTW, did I mention that? or video) The book shoud give you some artist to start chasing down an alley.

Woodshopaholics

Hey all,
check out Russell's blog at www.tonabrix.blogspot.com. It's really good and has a ton(ha ha) of information about all sorts of stuff. Class was great tonight. It was good to see many folks making cuts and learning tools. You'll be ruling the world very soon with your skill saw skilz!!!! We'll start reading the book on Manday and that will be a big help in picking your ten Artist Trading Cards.
Later for now,

The text for this semester is "This Is Modern Art" by Mathew Collings You need to get it(I'd try it used or see if anyone whose taken my class in the past has a copy to sell) by next Monday September 14th.

Jim White Documentary

No it's not an April Fools Day prank. We are watching "Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus" at 7:00pm in the Gomache Theatre in the Student Center. I hope your sketchbooks are looking good. I emailed everyone the GRANT application. Please consider filling one out. You need to stop by Simple G's before next Monday with measurements or the actual work so that Steve knows what is heading his way. We can deliver the day of only if it's simple install. If it isn't you'll need to make arrangements with Steve. 827-9997. See you on Weds. I'll be in S-3 during the regular time so folks needing the woodshop can work. I'll head over to the theatre at around 6:30 to get set-up for the film.

O.K. Here goes

Monday Night the 23rd @ 6:00-Ken Mcmillian metal workshop. Studio time up until then. Bring Cuttle bones(at least 2) Target, Walmart, Pet Co. You will fail the class if you don't have them(I'm barely kidding) since we've talked about it since the early 1970's.
April 1st at 7:00 pm in the Gomache Theatre we'll be watching Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus. The studio will be open and available from 4:45-6:45 for making ART.
April 8th is Exhibit(sketchbooks on Spring Break-I'll hav esome Uses Time Wisely Stickers for a lucky few!!!!) at Simple Gestures-Start the Media Circus; PSA press release posters etc. Invite everyone!!!!! FACEBOOK, Mailing list from last show. Sertoma Thrift store would be a great place for flyers. Simple G's should be getting flyers ASAP to put in every customers bag that shop's there btwn now and then. MUSIC? are we gonna have any.
It's not to early to start thinking about your installation for the cubby(tubby) exhibit. Flyers for that exhibit should be handed out at the April 8th show!!!!! That date was pushed to the 15th of April.
Keep reading the book. Post on the Blog for next week about the next 10 pages. I think that'll put us up to 24(there's only like 40) ALso I am keeping track of the fact that almost noone is blogging when they're supposed to about the book.(no big deal only 5 points per entry however it could make the difference between a grade level) Everyone has an A on first project( I said that in class after the first show) so you should feel in the dark about your grade. If you do Please come have a chat.
Malea's visit was cool- I'll help facilitate that project. Extra credit will be given for anyone interested in installing the piece out in Hastings. I'll confirm date and times with Malea. Perhaps we could come up with some preliminary sketches soon to run by her.
That about does it. Obviously ya'll are looking and taking note of Living contemporary artists to remedy poor performance on Pre-Final exam for the final exam.
Elizabeth Murray, Franz West, Dennis Hopper, Ed Ruscha, Gillian Wearing, Pippolitti Rist, Elizabeth Peyton, The Starn Twins, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Greely Myatt, Gregg Schlanger, Kara Walker, Red Feather, SimpARC, Turquios Mountain, Art Chantry, Chip Kidd, Steve Mcqeen(sp?)are a few folks that you might want to check out.
Have a great Spring Break. Have Fun, Be Safe, Make ART!!!

Mandy was right!!!

I did think I should have seen comments about the book because I did say so in the last post. You can googly it. Seems like the 2x4 project is back on track. Mary is ripping stuff down using a jig cause it's like this and like that and like this and uh. We talked about Cuttle Bones and the in-class metal project. I'm trying to reschedule with Ken for the 23rd or the 25th. I'll keep ya'll posted. Sketchbooks are gonna sneak up on ya if you're not careful. Also you need to keep looking at artist. I'll give you a list. William Pope.L, Tracey Emin, Sarah Sze, Sarah Lucas, David Altmedj(SP?), Wayde Guyton, Kelley Walker etc. etc.

Movie night and a delightful coup

So everyone should get two one dollar food items from the dollar store and also roll with your creativity the evening of the event. We will meet at 4:45pm at the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum(CEAM).
The 2x4 project has officially changed. On Monday we will take a look at the small(8inch 1in=1ft) pieces that each of you are working on. This should give you some ideas about the larger project.
Also read the next 10 pages of the book and post about it. SKETCHBOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!(friendly reminder)
Good class tonight,

Show Review, Pancake Station and FSS No Glitter!

Sorry about the late posting but there were technical difficulties after class which is my only window except for times like this at 7:33am. Joey is helping Windy cook eggies.
So SHOW REVIEW- Everyone needs to post about the entire process of the show from volunteering on Jan-26th to the SHow on Feb 18th. Talk about your work(titles) what they mean about others work, what your involvement in the PR blast was, networking at the exhibit(did you meet anyone new & did you take advantage of the situation), and don't forget the food and the band or anything else that was part of your experience. I know I said everyone got an A but that's contingent upon following through on this part of the process(REFLECTION YO).

2X4 Project- Post(mandatory) on Russel's blog- tonofbrix (sorry my computer won't let me add a link) and check out some great wood sculptors. Do this by next Monday. Rules- 1. Stain but no paint 2.Must use the entire 2x4(but only 1) 3. Wood Burning and Carving O.K. 4. Nails, Screws and Soccer Balls(found objects) O.K. and 5. FSS No Glitter!!!!!

CFAR and SOCC Presents-Pancake Station-Let's keep talking about it.

Betty Griffin Project-Malea Guiriba is going to come and speak to the class so ya'll can meet, measure, poke, prod, question etc. so you can design her collapsable, portable, public art piece.

See you Tonight.

Alison Rocks

So Alison gets the best snack brought to class ever superlative. Sushi for everyone one yo! Tonights class was really cool. Everyone just came and got right to it. Next class we are meeting at Sertoma Second Time Around Store for install, trouble shooting and tweaking before the show on Weds. Mandy will let us know for sure but it sounds like Aslyn us our band for the night of. We'll need to bring $5 dollars on or before the night of the show to give to them. No oops I forgot nonsense either. They need to leave with $50(I'm puttin in $5 as well) on Weds. That's ridiculously cheap by the way. Have a great and safe weekend and call or email me if you need to. Oh I've added sketches by Libby and Ashlee and a finished piece by Christine(hair sifter) and the Sushi attack.

Honey We Need Hangers

Mandy, Sorry your image is sideways. I rotated and saved it but it's still wonky. Christine here's the image I missed last class. Alison said she's gonna make some analog fliers. Steve made a myspace event and Ashlee said 35 people have confirmed. Last Wednesday Becky Greenberg(a SOCC supporter)gave us a big shout out in her neighborhood column. Thanks Becky! I think fliers will be good to get to Sertoma, Simple G's etc to have them put in all customers bags. Ashlee was gonna have Dan Mccook help us out with a PSA. Now is the time to really push since there is some momentum. Do you feel it?

Sketchbooks

Thanks to everyone who posted. I think they were really thoughtful and I hope set the tone for the rest of us to really start an organic dialogue about the text and the class in general. Here are some pictures of Alison, Christine, Cap'n Gabby, Steve and Mandy's sketchbooks. Have great weekend.

p.s. Sorry Christine your photo wouldn't load. I'll try next class.

Consciousness makes artifacts of us all.

Hey ya'll,
Everyone should have their book by now. I'm cruising through it and it's really good(I think). Please post on pages 4-8 ish of the book. I think that our experience of having the thrift store(our gallery and our studio) as well as S-3 as a communal studio become really interesting when plugged into O'doherty's ideas about the studio, artist and gallery.
Losers Weepers is another working title along with Touch Not the Cat. We will send out a press release next class. This should have at least one digital image attached to it. I'll bring my camera. The early sketchbooks look good. Remember these will be the focus of an exhibit later on in the semester. They should be rad not sad(sorry).

Our first three or so classes

So on our first class I talked alot and then I talked some more. Nice to meet you. Told everyone to order the book, Studio and Cube by Brian O'doherty. We celebrated MLK day all in our own way. Thanks to Flagler for recognizing Dr. King. The next class I brought wire hangers because Louana and me( at the O.U.R. Center Food Bank and Clothes Closet) and everyone we know doesn't know what to do with them. You guys had fun and made some cool stuff. Then we went to Sertoma Second time around where Goldie gave us the run down about Sertoma, Doc and the store. You guys got right to it like pros organizing the books. Everyone scored mad thrift loot. Mandy played the electric organ. I got it on video but from a weird angle. Tonight we were back in class and you guys got to work on your sculptures for the show. We need to start thinking about titles and start reading the book. Touch Not The Cat is my favorite possible title so far.
