The final will be ya'll rectifying your day 1 inability to rattle off ten LIVING sculptors of note.
The semester has been great. The first two shows have gone well. Keep pushing for the final show. POSTERS anyone. Facebook. Start talking about it. It's not to late. Push Push Push Push Push!
Remember they shouldn't suck. Emily's is a good guide. You know the piece that won the student show!!!!!!!

SERTOMA Exhibit and DRIFT CENTERFOLD ya'll

Congrats to all especially Corey for his good fortune of having his piece dead center in the DRIFT this month. Everyone did a swell job presenting themselves while they were around. Make sure and pick copies up and send one home to the family and keep one for your records.
Check out this video of Aslyn and Matt singing a Gillian Welch song.

HARDWARE SHOW

Hey all,
I got a call on Friday from KC at the Hardware store. He's waiting for some follow up from us. I told him I'd stop by this week. Please stop in and introduce yourself and see what kinda of space looks good for your work. These pieces should look amazing as you've had tons of time to get them to that "amazing state" Also don't forget about food, band, soda pop etc.
BTW Aslyn and Naysayers have confirmed for SERTOMA exhibit. Please take a poster to SERTOMA this week someone/anyone!!!!
We are heading to J-ville Anthropologie this Wednesday for class. It's gonna be cool. Danielle is very excited and has stuff for us to do while we are there. We have to fill out forms again tonight.

Date for the Book store show

Hey all,
The date for the bookstore show is March 31st from 5-8 pm. So now you have your work cut out for you. Bookstore exhibit, Hamblin Hardware Show, Simple Gestures Show(sketch books and 10 artist trading cards). Tom Sachs might be a good interview to read in relationship to the SERTOMA Exhibit. Then again it's just a good interview period. Oh, it's from this cool book where all of these sculptors are interviewed about their work and working process.
Anyway, as of yet there haven't really been any grading in class(except the sound of people not getting credit for commenting on the blog) because you guys decided to push the show back to April 2nd. I can only grade each of your pieces after the exhibits as being there and how you present them and participate in the production of the event is all part of the grade. Please feel free to discuss your finished 2x4 pieces with me if you'd like more feedback than I've already given to you during the making of.
I think we can go to Anthropologie on Wednesday the 24th of March to get a tour and make stuff that will be included in the windows!!!!! I'll confirm with Danielle this week and plan it.
There are some good comments from the last posting. Thanks to all who are contributing to the online dialouge.
See you tomorrow,
mikewindy

Hardware Store Show!!!

Good work from the fact finding crew that went to the Hardware Store. How cool will that be to connect to another local business and use your work to support them. The project is still due on February 17th. We need to get on to the next project. We will start talking about it on Monday.
Have a great weekend. Be safe!

Shiver Me Timbers?

So Some of you left with 20 minutes left of class and meanwhile 6 of your classmates love "Shiver Me Timbers" as the title to the show. Also, Amelia, Julia, Joe and Denise are heading over to the True Value Hardware Store on King Street tomorrow to ask the owners about the show happening there instead of in S-3. Check the comments from the last post for the time. I'm cool with changing the show date if it serves the work better. Especially if it helps to promote a local business. I don't shop at that hardware store but might if you all put a show up there and lead me in! ART WORKS! Thanks to Joe and others IF THEY FOLLOW THROUGH!!!!?????
Either way the show is gonna rock. Check the video and see how much effort is going in.
So.........Shiver Me Timbers? is that the show title? If so start facebookin it yo. Flyers!!!!! Amelia, Julia, Joe and Denise tell us all the good news as soon as you hear it!!!!! With Dates. Is it still on a Wednesday? Please make use of studio time on Wednesday. If I'm not there it means I'm not talking and taking up your time working which means you are kicking it old school and getting much work done!!!!!

2x4 by love?

O.K. starting NOW! comment on the blog weekly. Noone except Joe has commented on the blog yet. He has also suggested the only title for the exhibit. 2x4xlove or 2x4xall. Any suggestions? We need to send this out this week. Also fliers and facebook/myspace activity needs to commence. February 17th(wednesday) Anybody have an idea for a band. We will all pay $5 and hire a band. That's 15x5=$75. I have a few contacts unless anyone else has any suggestions. Remember it's your show. Talk about it, email each other comment on the blog. Make it happen!!!!! Don't forget to invite all of your teachers, family and friends.
I will not be in class on Wednesday. Please use that time wisely. I will see if Laura can have a work study student be in the shop or see if Russell can stay later to let you have access to the shop. Remember Friday's are studio days, use them.
Also, start reading the book and commenting on the blog. I like the Tom Sachs interview alot. I like how he talks about branding and marketing in relationship to the Art Business.
Remember you need to pick ten living sculptors to research and make artist trading cards for. This book should give you some ideas.

Press release

Great class tonight. Good to see everyone here and working. Please remember to sign in each day. If your not on that sign in then you weren't here. Next Monday we will spend the first 20 minutes or so of class hammering out a press release to send to Flalger's media folk's. The exhibit will be February 17th which is a Wednesday evening and will be from 5-8pm. Here is a link about writing press releases http://www.ehow.com/how_2127339_write-press-release-exhibit.html Please read and start thinking of show titles. If anyone has images of a piece in progress or an idea for a show poster please bring it in.
Later,
mike
p.s. Please start commenting on the blog for discussion points(and to become a closer knit community of artist making awesome work)

Welcome Spring 2010

Welcome to the Sculpture One Coffee Club. We are going to dive right in. I have a new system this semester of students signing in and out of class each day. Ah to be an art student and waltz in and out of studio classes(I did it to). SO! there will be a clip board in class each day and if for some(very legitimate reason) i.e. you need to leave class to go get something from your dorm to bring back to better sculpt in my class it will be noted on the sign in/sign out sheet. Please sign in as you will be absent if you do not. With Studio classes only being 2 hours now I want to be very protective of your time in my class as I will make certain most of it will be time for you to experiment with new materials and processes, work in your sketch books and become a better artist.

1st Project-2x4
Everyone needs to bring a 2x4(8feet long) to class next Wednesday the 20th to begin our project. Please do not get the 2x4 cut and ABSOLUTELY NO PRESSURE TREATED 2x4's.
These will cost you between $2.50 and $3.00 depending on the price of gas. You can get them at any local hardware store.
Each person will use one 2x4 to make a sculpture with. I will give a Safety Workshop about the wood shop and you can get started next week using any tool in the joint.
We will agree on a date next Wednesday for an exhibit of these finished pieces and start the process of planning: show title, press releases, social media events, flyers, food and hiring a band.

The text this semester will be Conversations on Sculpture (Perspectives on Contemporary Sculpture) by Glenn Harper and Twylene Moyer (Paperback - Nov 30, 2007). It's available on Amazon for under $20(your welcome). Please have it by Monday the 25th and bring it to every class.

The blog will be the tool I use to Grade class participation/discussion. I expect each of you to comment weekly on the blog about the class, the book, or an art/sculpture related topic that adds to a useful discourse that will push quality art production among you and your peers.

Last semester's SOCC was incredible but I'm sure you guys are up to the challenge to raise the bar for your fellow artist taking the class next semester.
GO TEAM!!!!
