The date for the bookstore show is March 31st from 5-8 pm. So now you have your work cut out for you. Bookstore exhibit, Hamblin Hardware Show, Simple Gestures Show(sketch books and 10 artist trading cards). Tom Sachs might be a good interview to read in relationship to the SERTOMA Exhibit. Then again it's just a good interview period. Oh, it's from this cool book where all of these sculptors are interviewed about their work and working process.
Anyway, as of yet there haven't really been any grading in class(except the sound of people not getting credit for commenting on the blog) because you guys decided to push the show back to April 2nd. I can only grade each of your pieces after the exhibits as being there and how you present them and participate in the production of the event is all part of the grade. Please feel free to discuss your finished 2x4 pieces with me if you'd like more feedback than I've already given to you during the making of.
I think we can go to Anthropologie on Wednesday the 24th of March to get a tour and make stuff that will be included in the windows!!!!! I'll confirm with Danielle this week and plan it.
There are some good comments from the last posting. Thanks to all who are contributing to the online dialouge.
See you tomorrow,

So, in regards to the Tom Sachs interview, I really liked how he incorporated a lot of fashion influences into his work. And I especially loved when he said fashion is horrible when it makes people start feeling inferior because I think a lot of people get sucked into that vortex. I don't know if that's what u'd intended for us to get out of the article when you suggested we read it Mike. O, Julia I'm sure you loved when Tom Sachs called Hello Kitty an icon of meaninglessness.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm looking forward to Anthropologie at the end of March!
Amelia, It seesm like you got exactly what YOU needed from the article. I'm very glad you read it as I think he is a great example of someone who's invented a pretty specific strategy to live and be creative in this world. Plus I think his work is really fun to look at and really smart in the way it makes us ask all sorts of questions about our relationship between objects, marketing, art, ownership etc. I love the Channel Chainsaw sculpture he made in the late 90's.
ReplyDeleteWorking at the bookstore was fun, it's a cool little place. I'm glad we could help out. I got some good photography books for just $5. I'm excited for the show on the 31st. I like how all of our shows will be back to back!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely happy about the bookstore project. I never knew that was going on in there. I'm a big fan of books, especially cheap used ones. Looking forward to these shows as well. I'm not sure if we've decided what the theme for this next project is to be.
ReplyDeletehaha, amelia! i haven't read that one yet but i will soon--i can't say i disagree with that statement though. it's just the asian in me that loves the humanized adorable creatures that serve no purpose...
ReplyDeletehey guys,
ReplyDeletei got a little stoked about the shows and made a poster/facebook event for the salvage show.
i dont know how to post pictures on here, but heres the link to the facebook event with the poster as the image.
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=10150101945745648&ref=mf
we should print this poster (and ones for the other shows) out and put em everywhere.
give me your name so I can put in on the facebook event
let me know if anything should be added/changed/whatevered to the facebook event and the poster itself.
hope i didn't step on any toes by just going ahead and doing it myself, but i wanted to get the word out there asap.
someone else can do the stuff for the other two shows.
Mike- can you email me a list of everyone in the class so i can write their names on the event?
the poster is fantastic! We should definitely print some out and hang them around town. Thanks so much for making it Denise!
ReplyDeletelove the poster denise!! u didnt step on my toes ha, feel free to give me posters and id be happy to hang them around town
ReplyDeleteDenise, The poster rocks. I put a link to it on my facebook page. Email me the image at mmitchell1@flagler.edu and I can post it on the blog.
ReplyDeleteIf you can change the show event to say SERTOMA Book Store in the Ponce Mall. Also I'll email doc and get SERTOMA's website info.
Good work. See ya'll tonight
I am really excited to go to the Anthropology store and learn some behind the scenes magic!
ReplyDeleteDo we know when the sketchbook show is yet?
-Ashley Bowman
The salvage show ad on facebook is freaking sweet! mad props denise!!
ReplyDeletedoes anyone know when we are going to anthropology and what we are going to do there?
ReplyDeleteHey Mike. I had a question about our show on the 2nd at Hamlin. That is the same night as the Juried Art Show on campus and I am sure some of us are going to submit work to that. How is that situation going to be handled? I know you want us there the whole time, but will a exception be made so we can go see our work in that show too?
ReplyDelete-Ashley Bowman
hey guys,
ReplyDeletei took advantage of the print-for-free situation in the gs lab (shh!)
and i printed out a BUNCH of salvage posters. they are in my pull-out drawer with my name on it in S-7. please feel free to take them and pass them around and hang them up and whatever.
-denise
Will do once spring blink has come and gone. Surprised it's not over yet actually. . .Really good job on the posters Denise. Is there a bookstore show seperate from the sketchbook show or are they the same thing?
