The Hot Lava Brigade

So,
I sent the listing information to Renee at the compass. There didn't seem to be a boat load of energy directed towards a press release. I think someone should do a PSA for Flagler College radio. If I end up doing all of the press for your guys' exhibit I won't show it in class but I'll be really depressed and disappointed(really). I'm not on my knees begging but I am sitting down. Please, Please, Please don't work against yourselves and not put in the SMALL effort(posters/flyers and sending a few emails) to let people know about the show. So far the work I've seen and talked with a few of you about is well deserving of a good crowd to come out and see it. The press release info is as follows: The Hot Lava Brigade presents the Collaborative Cubby Hole Conference, Wednesday, December 3rd from 5-8pm in room S-8 of the Molly Wiley Art Building on Flagler College Campus. Installations by 12 local Sculptors. Send pictures( to the media) if you have any(take some).
Later and have a safe weekend.

Hey remember that time when you guys played the molten lava game?

Hey,
Remember that time we played around with 2x4s before we started cutting them up? That was awesome.

Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus and most of the class!

So, those of you who showed up saw what I think is a really important film; Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus. For those of you who were UNABLE to attend if you have a decent excuse I might let you borrow the DVD. If you have a poor excuse then not so much borrowing will occur. Monday you will need 4(four) Cuttle Bones(look it up) to participate in the in-class assignment. If you do not have 4(FOUR not THREE not TWO not ONE but 4(FOUR)) then you will be absent. In case you passed out during that last sentence you'll need 4(FOUR)Cuttle Bones. The sqaure root of 16=4. Hey that's how many Cuttle Bones you'll need for class on Monday for our in-class assignment with Ken Mcmillian. Wednesday I will do a rubber mold making demo and we will pour plaster into some of the ready-made molds that ya'll have been collecting since the first of MANY times I've mentioned it in class. I hope you have great weekend. The AVANT GARBAGE ART EXHIBIT that everyone has work for is Tommorrow(FRIDAY) on the west lawn. If you enter it that will make three(including our upcoming one) shows for your resume just this semester. Speaking of our upcoming show we need to nail down a date and do the whole Press Release/media blitz probably by next week Wednesday so mull it over a bit over the weekend. Have a great one and be safe. Call me or email me if you have any questions.

Cuttle Bones!!!!!!!!!

Hey for class on Monday everyone needs to pick up 4(four) cuttle bones from Petco or Walmart(93 cents each)or some place that sells cuttle bones. I wouldn't wait until the last minute on this. Ken Mcmillian is coming to our class to do a table top metal casting demonstration. It's gonna be cool.

PUMPKIN SOUP ANYONE?

So, remember when I said if you have time before Monday to pull the pumpkin off the concrete? Yeah, pumpkins can get pretty gross. Anyway sorry about missing class on Monday. Joey and Windy have been under the weather and I felt like I was coming down with it as well and thought it might be best to avoid passing it along to ya'll. Monday we will either begin plaster casting or do a table top metal workshop facilitated by Ken Mcmillian. Remember to bring in plastic packaging to use as moulds(i.e. toys,tools,mp3s, bottles). Don't forget tommorrow night the movie begins at 7:00pm.

I meant Francis Bacon not Francis Bacon!

Several of you connected Jim White to the the Francis Bacon that wrote The New Atlantis in 1627. I meant Francis Bacon the British painter, though thanks to Wikipedia I now know that he is a collateral descendant of Francis Bacon the Elizabethian philosopher. I also know that either way is fine and Jim White would enjoy being connected to either of these dead men but several of you just lost your place on my all conference listening in class team.

Six Degrees of Francis Bacon

The six degrees are looking good. I thought I would post and remind anyone who hasn't yet that JIM WHITE is who we're connecting to Francis Bacon, not JIM SHAW. Though he's cool too. Remember to bring a Pumpkin to class on Monday for the first part of our Rachel Whiteread Pumpkin Project. The 2x4 pieces were really nice. Let's make sure and get pictures of all of them. See ya tomorrow.

Success

I think the show was a success. There were at least 80 people over the course of the evening and the band was GREAT. Congrats on all of the hard work, organizing, bringing food and showing up. All of the Sertoma folks couldn't say enough good stuff about the class and the art.
Remember to bring a 2x4(1.5 x 3.5 inches) to class on Monday for our project for this week.

Day of the Show

Install went really well on Monday. I think it's interesting looking at all the work in the store compared to seeing it at our critique last week. The store really absorbs the work. I'm curious to see the response of people that won't know exactly where the work is. Will they be able to tell what's art and what's not in the store. Is the whole store art now? One big collaborative installation? Doc said she was gonna try to clear some isles and make a little room for opening night. Also we are gonna leave the show up for at least one week. Someone wanted to buy Adam's piece on Tuesday. Doc invited him to the show to see if Adam's willing to part with it. Don't forget to bring food. Sertoma is providing paper plates.

Install on Monday

Hey all,
Great work last night at the critique. I'm excited about seeing it all at the store. Remember bring all hardware you need to hang your work. I'm bringing some tools but if you have your own bring em' as well. I am helping Rebecca move her piece from S-3 to the store on Monday so we may be there a little after 4:00pm but don't wait on us. Go ahead and get started. Also don't forget fliers, posters, postcards. It's never too late, though to do them after the opening would be lame.

Pictures Anyone?

Renee Unsworth(compass editor) has asked if we have any digital pictures of work. I sent her a few photos: one of some of you guys volunteering and one of Adam making art. If you have a good(clear) picture of your work send it to her at the following address. It may make it into the Compass! renee.unsworth@staugustine.com

PRESS RELEASE, RELEASE!

Whoa. I hope alot of you just didn't follow direction and forgot to copy me on your emails when you sent the press release. I have only gotten a few emails. I'm sure I'm just being a paranoid professor. I know you guys took this seriously and sent out the press release to lots of people. Yeah, I'm just being paranoid. Right?

Title for Thrift Store Show

Hey everyone. Start thinking of titles for our thrift store show. Also look up info about writing press releases and Public Service Announcements(PSA) so we can send them out to various media outlets. Also Tommy talked to a band that needs $ to play the opening so we should discuss that as well on Monday. Don't forget to bring your sketch books to class and your TIMA as well.

2nd Time Around Thrift Store Project

Project 1 Fall 2008

Monday September 8th class met from 4:45-6:45 at Sertoma's(service to mankind) 2nd Time Around Thrift Store. Doc came in and kept the store open so we could help out(she's rad). It seems like we got alot done in the back and that we all got some cool stuff to make a sculpture out of. We decided on having the show on October the 8th(one month from today). We will start making art on Wednesday and over the weekend we will all work on a press release and PSA for Flagler radio. October the 1st is the critique for this project and Monday the 6th we will meet at the store again to install. Start thinking of titles for the exhibit.

Welcome to Sculpture One Coffee Club

Welcome to mikewindy's Sculpture One class blog. Each class we'll be brewing up a hot pot of coffee and all of my former students are welcome to stop by and have free coffee as long as I'm teaching here at Flagler hence the name of the blog. I'll be posting assignments, due dates, suggestions, etc on the blog.

p.s. Bring your own cup and leave it if you like.
